How many wines of this quality can you find at this price? Quite a few, to be fair. What about handcrafted ones? Still several. Well then, produced from the fruit of a hundred-year-old vines? Hardly any, to be honest. Unculín is one of them, one of the best. A wine which is much more serious and profound than you might expect from one so reasonably-priced. What’s more, from the 2019 vintage onwards, its character is even fresher and more fluid thanks to the contribution of white grapes such as Godello, Doña Blanca and Palomino, as was done in past times. There’s also the addition of 5% Alicante Bouschet (Garnacha Tintorera). It used to be a very good choice for getting to know a Mencía in all its purity, but now it’s an excellent ambassador for Bierzo’s reds as a whole.
