Venta Mazarrón is the starter wine from the Viñas del Cenit winery located in Villanueva de Campeán (Zamora) on the left bank of the Duero. Bush vines with ungrafted rootstock which can be up to 180 years old are the true treasure of this area, a little-known region with a huge potential. Tempranillo grapes grown in small plots give the wine a great personality based on a perfect balance between fragrance, volume and acidity — features which mean the wines can be kept for a long time. For their Venta Mazarrón wine, Viñas del Cenit use their youngest vines which, being 40 years old, would actually be considered old vines in different locations. Traditional and sustainable vine-growing methods ensure that their wines are enveloping, warm and rich. The climate and soils here are similar to those in the neighbouring DO Toro appellation and the wines share the same characteristics — wines full of the typicity of Zamora, with earthy aromas of rich opulent black fruit. Spices such as cinnamon, cloves and pepper mix with soothing balsamic, almost minty, tones of bay leaves and undergrowth. Its intensity can be clearly felt through a strong tannicity and perfect acidity which maintain an excellent balance. Classic hints of good wood give elegance to a strongly cherry-coloured wine with deep aromas. Liquorice and blackberries delight while the vigour of this splendid wine is adorned with a fine silkiness of pure pleasure as it swills around your cheeks. A bitter and somewhat dry ending, with creamy hints of oak and touches of clove and leather, it is an unctuous wine with a very, very long finish.
